It offered backward compatibility with the 2600 library while delivering improved graphics and processing power for newer games. Though released in the shadow of the <a href=\"https:\/\/marksvintagecomputers.com\/?p=105\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"105\">Nintendo Entertainment System<\/a>, the Atari 7800 still made its mark with a small but quality game library including <em>Asteroids<\/em>, <em>Robotron: 2084<\/em>, and <em>Pole Position II<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hardware Specifications<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Processor<\/strong>: Atari SALLY 6502 running at 1.79 MHz<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Graphics<\/strong>: MARIA graphics chip supporting 256 colors, with resolutions up to 320&#215;240 pixels<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Memory<\/strong>: 4 KB of RAM<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Storage<\/strong>: Cartridge-based games (up to 128 KB per game)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Audio<\/strong>: 2-channel audio via TIA chip (same as Atari 2600), with the ability to use POKEY sound chip for enhanced audio (though few games did)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Connectivity<\/strong>: Two controller ports, backward compatibility with most Atari 2600 controllers and games<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Video Output<\/strong>: RF output (modding options for composite and S-video)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Original Release :<\/strong> May 1986<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Discontinued:<\/strong> 1st January 1992<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cost (New in 1987):<\/strong> \u00a3100<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cost (In 2024 Price):<\/strong> \u00a3285<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to corrosion\/rust damage I don&#8217;t think this one will be possible to repair, but I will keep it just in case.<\/p>\n\n\n\nngg_shortcode_0_placeholder\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Atari was designed as a follow-up to the 2600 and the ill-fated Atari 5200.
